Employee Spotlight – Larry Marine

The Lean Scaled Spotlight series is a casual and fun way for us here at Lean Scaled Architects to share a little professional background, some of our personal hobbies or passion projects, and interesting tidbits about our team.

Larry MarineHi! My name is Larry Marine.  I am the Director of UX Architecture at Lean Scaled Architects.

I question everything and try to look at issues from different perspectives. I get a rush out of that ah-ha moment of discovering the root cause that more accurately redefines a problem. One of my favorite sayings is: If you don’t accurately define the problem, the best you can hope to do is solve the wrong problem very well.

The Interview

1.What did you want to be when you grew up?

A husband and father.

2. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do for a living?

I research problems to identify the root cause then create strategies for resolving them. I focus mostly in the technology space conducting User Experience Research and Design.

3. In 3 words, describe your occupation or what do you enjoy most about your job?

I solve problems.

4. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

You never have to make excuses for doing the right thing.

5. What are your main sources of inspiration? Are there any outlets you reference regularly?

I get ideas from listening to people’s struggles, especially product design influenced struggles. It gets me thinking about how it could be redesigned to eliminate the struggles.

6. Where do you see yourself (and your brand if applicable) in 10 years time?

Retired!

7. What’s the most treasured belonging/item in your own home?

I’m not a materialistic person and don’t really have a treasured object, but one thing I really like is my bike. It was the team bike and I’ve ridden about 100,000 miles on it. There’s also a picture of one of my daughters that is special. The look on her face is precious.

8. What was the last rule you broke?

Giving up waiting on a red light at 5:00 in the morning.

9. What’s one thing other people may not know about you (for example any hidden talents)?

I barely escaped getting crushed by an aircraft carrier. I dove out of the way just before it hit and crushed the spot I was standing in.

10. You’ve got a week off, where are you going?

Windsurfing, surfing, sailing, skiing, trying something new.
